He holds a degree in laser physics from the University of Essex and a master’s in microwave physics from the University of Portsmouth.
Edward began his career developing laser-welded semiconductor laser packages for local area networks and later worked as a laser applications engineer. IP became a significant focus when his company had to pay royalties for US sales due to submarine patents.*
He has extensive experience in the IP sector, having worked:
• In private practice at a medium-sized London firm
• In-house at Nortel Networks (responsible for Wireless IP in EMEA before the company folded in 2010 – its Wireless IP portfolio later sold for $4.5 billion in 2013)
• In-house at Siemens UK (covering water and gas metering systems, automotive fuel injection, and more)
• With Plessey Research and Oxford Magnet Technology
In 2004, Edward became the appointed attorney for a manufacturing company divested from Siemens, later acquired by KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co Inc.), forming the initial client base of HEIPS, now in its 21st year.
His technical focus spans:
• Mechanical and electrical engineering
• Telecommunications
• Medical devices and prostheses
• Renewable energy
• Automotive components
• Utility metering
• Ultra-low temperature refrigeration
• Optical communications
• Consumer and paediatric health products
• Mobile technologies
He handles all forms of IP: patents, designs, trademarks, copyright, licensing, development agreements, and confidentiality agreements.
Edward works with other patent attorneys in specialist areas such as chemistry and biochemistry.
Notably:
• In 2003, he instructed counsel to defend Oxford Magnet Technology (now Siemens Magnet Technology) in a patent dispute with the University of Queensland, resulting in a finding of non-infringement.
• In 2013, Nortel’s Wireless IP portfolio sold for $4.5 billion. Despite predictions, the winning bid by a consortium including Apple, Microsoft, RIM, and Ericsson exceeded expectations due to the presence of standard-essential patents.
*Submarine patents were U.S. patents that remained unpublished for extended periods under pre-1997 rules, then surfaced unexpectedly, typically to extract royalties or extend protection periods.
